Film Screening of Typeface at Scandinavian Church - Liverpool.

"Typeface" focuses on a rural museum and print shop in Wisconsin where international artists meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique”.

 

A few blocks off the main drag, in a section of the old cavernous Hamilton printing factory, a lone employee waits in the most popular of these museums for visitors to come. A couple of individuals straggle in every few days and then, come Friday, the museum fills with life. Machines hum, presses print, artists buzz about. The place comes alive as printmaking workshops led by, and filled with, some of the region’s top creative talent descend on the sleepy enclave. The museum is significant to the town’s history, but more importantly, its existence is critical to the worldwide design community who are passionate about the history of their craft and its function in the contemporary field. They believe the future of their industry may lie in the past.

 

The latest documentary in progress from Kartemquin, this  film will be of interest to art and graphic design enthusiasts, to teachers as an educational resource, and to anyone looking for a film about perseverance and preservation in the heart of America.

The Nordic Cultural Centre is based in the Scandinavian Church at the corner of Park Lane and Cornhill. This Grade II  building was built in 1884 in order to respond to the needs of seafarers and emigrants from Scandinavia.

 

In the intervening years it has been adapted to modern needs and is now the centre of excellence for residents of the five Nordic countries in the North West as well as offering a wide variety of activities for the local community, including film screenings and exhibitions.

Process is Form - Book Launch

Team will be having a launch event for their eagerly anticipated book, Process is Form, in Manchester on Thursday 2nd September in conjunction with INC. All INC members will receive a free copy of the book on the evening. 

The event will feature a talk by Design Project, the designers of the book, on the thinking behind the project which analyses the relationship between the process and mechanics of print production and the practice of design and communication. 

Practical and informative, but beautifully designed and printed, the book provides an excellent platform to show off Team’s printing capabilities and also demonstrates their keenness to get ‘stuck in’ to help designers realise their printed projects, no matter how complicated they may be. The extensive use of special colours (24 colours, plus different foils and finishes throughout) really gives a taste of the comprehensive print and finishing services Team can offer. 

So if you want to find out more about how a highly complex book of this nature comes together, make sure you don't miss this one-off opportunity to hear the designers talk specifically about the project.

INC in association with L&K Creative are very proud to present the film 'Typeface - A film by Justine Nagan' for the first time in Yorkshire.

Typeface - a production by Kartemquin Films, shows the reality of the digital age as it challenges master craftsmen in their environment, this film opens up a very real life portrayal of the effects, changes and fight for survival in an age of throw-away creativity.

From the onset it clearly shows a passion for creative skills, showcasing a place where international artists and retired craftsmen remain true to their heritage, but for how long and what can be lost? The historical and contemporary approaches in rural and urban America, combined with passion and logic makes for a fascinating film.

Printing at Hot Bed press

Here are some pictures of Daren Newman from Funnel Creative printing the posters for Friday's screening of Typeface at Shillington College.

They were printed at Hot Bed Press, a print makers studio in Salford, and are currently on the drying racks awaiting a new home.

Two limited edition posters by Daren Newman (www.meandmypen.com) will be available to buy on the night. Both printed by traditional letterpress, the first has been created with wood block type at Incline Press in Oldham (www.inclinepress.com), and the second will feature some of Daren's beautiful hand drawn type.

The posters will cost £15 each, but only £7.50 to members of INC. 

We'll also take deposits for posters on the night, for anyone who wants to collect at a later date. After this event the posters will be on sale for £75 so this will be a great opportunity to get your hands on a limited edition hand crafted print. 

 
 
 

FILM NIGHT: Typeface

 
The next Independent Northern Creative event, sponsored by Team, will be a screening of the internationally acclaimed film Typeface. Directed by Justine Nagan, the film is a fascinating documentary in progress about the Hamilton Woodtype Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Following the museum’s attempt to preserve the art of letterpress printing, the film gives an intriguing glimpse of life in this small mid-western town and demonstrates how the museum’s role in preserving and promoting traditional craft techniques have had a significant impact on helping to shape the future of contemporary design.

Venue: Shillington College, 1 Portland Street, Manchester
Date & TIme: May 14th @ 6.30pm.
